Translation Module — Third Year (Second Semester)

This module builds on the knowledge and skills acquired during the first semester by introducing students to specialized translation across professional domains. It aims to develop advanced translation competence through the analysis and translation of technical, scientific, legal, economic, and media-related texts from English into Arabic. Particular emphasis is placed on terminological research, documentary autonomy, domain-specific strategies, and stylistic adaptation to target discourse conventions. Students learn to apply methodological approaches such as pre-translation analysis, glossary management, and problem-solving techniques when dealing with specialized terminology and complex concepts. The module combines theoretical input with intensive practice to prepare students for professional translation contexts requiring precision, consistency, and subject-matter awareness.

Introduction To Translation

This course aims to develop students’ competence in specialized translation by moving beyond general language and introducing domain-specific texts and practices. Students explore the characteristics of specialized languages and learn how they differ from general discourse across various fields. Emphasis is placed on terminological research, documentary autonomy, and effective glossary management as essential professional skills.

Throughout the semester, learners apply appropriate translation strategies to a range of specialized domains, including advertising, journalism, administrative, economic, scientific, and introductory literary texts. Practical activities encourage pre-translation analysis, problem-solving, and adaptation to communicative purpose and audience, while respecting precision, objectivity, and stylistic conventions.

By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze specialized texts, select suitable translation strategies, manage terminology efficiently, and produce accurate, context-appropriate translations across multiple domains. The course culminates in a practical assessment and student-led translation projects that synthesize theoretical knowledge and applied skills.
