Description
The petroleum geology module aims to study the geological processes responsible for the formation, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons (oil and gas). It focuses on the analysis of sedimentary basins and the identification of petroleum systems.
The course covers, in particular:
- source rocks, reservoirs, and seals;
- mechanisms of hydrocarbon generation, migration, and trapping;
- types of petroleum traps (structural, stratigraphic, mixed);
- petroleum exploration methods (geological, geophysical, and geochemical data);
- evaluation of the petroleum potential of a sedimentary basin.
This module enables students to acquire the essential foundations to understand the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources, as well as their geological and economic context.
