This course introduces the fundamental concepts of geosciences and geology, beginning with their definitions, importance, and main branches, as well as their relationship with biology. It then explores the Earth as a planet, focusing on its position in the Solar System, shape, internal structure, and major components, including the atmosphere, crust, mantle, and core.
The course also examines rocks, their definition, formation through the rock cycle, and the main types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. Other key topics include erosion processes, stratigraphy and paleontology, and geochronology, which explains the history of the Earth and highlights the five major biological crises that have shaped life on the planet.
