II. Course Description

This course is designed for L3 students in the Mechanics Major who already possess foundational technical vocabulary from Technical English 1. It introduces more advanced drilling terminology, focusing on drilling fluids, well control, drilling dynamics, casing and cementing, and complex drilling problems. The module emphasizes understanding real operational language used on modern rigs and interpreting field documentation.

III. General Objective

Upon successful completion of this module, students will possess the advanced technical English skills required to interpret, analyze, and describe drilling operations and equipment at a higher level. Students will also be able to understand field reports, identify well control concepts, and communicate drilling-related issues using accurate, industry-standard terminology.

IV. Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe drilling fluid types, properties, and laboratory tests.

  • Understand basic well control terminology and drilling hydraulics concepts.

  • Recognize drill bit types, BHA components, and directional drilling fundamentals.

  • Explain casing design, cementing operations, and well integrity terminology.

  • Describe the function of major rig systems including top drive, mud pumps, and drawworks.

  • Identify and explain advanced drilling problems such as stuck pipe, kicks, pack-off, and surge/swab.

  • Interpret real drilling field documents such as DDRs, mud reports, and bit records.

  • Write clear and concise technical drilling reports in English.
