This module introduces the fundamental concepts and methods of Operations Research (OR), focusing on scientific and quantitative approaches to decision-making. It aims to equip students with analytical tools used to model, analyze, and optimize complex systems in engineering, economics, management, and logistics.
The course covers the formulation of real-world problems into mathematical models, especially linear programming, and explores solution methods such as graphical techniques and simplex-based approaches. It also introduces key topics like transportation problems, assignment problems, network models, and basic elements of decision theory.
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
-
Understand the role of Operations Research in rational decision-making
-
Translate practical problems into mathematical models
-
Apply optimization techniques to find optimal or near-optimal solutions
-
Interpret results and support decisions in real contexts
This module builds foundational skills essential for advanced studies in optimization, systems analysis, and management sciences.
