This course serves to bridge learners to the 20th century artistic and intellectual landscapes. It aims to underscore the eminence of modernist literature and culture in depicting the collective agony of a nation through architecting individual portrayals of despair and confusion in every splash of expression, telling a story. In the abstracted pieces this course highlights, students will be able to glue the fragments in disunity. They will construct the imaginative faculty to envisage and personalise the latent narrative hidden beneath the nonsensical display of feelings. In so doing, students travel with the actors on the page in emotional and contemplative journeys, fostering a communion with the story as they erase the blurring line between fiction and reality and between their own culture and the other’s. they forge a dialogic space that links the text being written to the language being displayed and to the social-cultural dimensions related to the 20th century in general and to World War I in particular.
