We can briefly say that the objective of optimal control theory is to control a system, so as to make it do something optimally.
This theory is part of a larger field called control theory (or command) which is close to Automatic Control.
Control theory studies the properties of commanded (or controlled) systems, that is to say, dynamic systems depending on a variable t which most often represents time, on which we can act by means of a command ( or control).
The goal is then to bring the system from a given initial state to a certain final state, possibly respecting certain criteria.
The objective of control theory can be:
1. to stabilize the system, that is to say, make it insensitive to disturbances; this is called stabilization
2. to determine optimal solutions for a certain optimization criterion; This is called optimal control, and it is the main objective of this course.
