This course initiates students to creative writing as a critical but imaginative activity. By means of guided writing, close reading, drafting, revision, and workshop discussion, students will learn how to write poetry, write descriptively, and create imagery. The focus is made on the writing process, observation, imagery, figurative language, and the connection between the form and meaning.
Students are taught to view creative writing as an art that can be improved through practice, reflection and peer criticism. The course promotes experimentation, language awareness, as well as creative risk. At the conclusion of the course, students will be expected to create a collection of updated creative work and feel confident about reading, discussing, and responding to creative texts.
