Petroleum Hydrogeology focuses on the study of the relationships between groundwater and hydrocarbons within geological reservoirs, emphasizing fluid flow in porous media and its influence on the formation, migration, and accumulation of oil and gas. It plays a key role in petroleum exploration and production by enabling the evaluation of water pressures, hydraulic gradients, and the hydrodynamic conditions of reservoirs. This knowledge is also applied to reservoir modeling, the design of water injection operations to enhance hydrocarbon recovery, and the environmental management related to produced water and the protection of groundwater resources.
